Weight and body composition after 40

Weight gain in midlife is not simply about eating less and exercising more. I help men and women understand what's driving changes in their body and help them to create long term and sustainable change.

Are you noticing changes since turning 40?

You may recognise these changes:

✓ Weight gain despite eating well

✓ Increasing fat around the middle

✓ Reduced muscle mass and strength

✓ Lower energy levels

✓ Difficulty losing weight compared with earlier years

✓ Frustration with conflicting nutrition advice

✓ Concerns about cholesterol, blood sugar or metabolic health

✓ A desire to improve your health without following restrictive diets

If this sounds familiar, you're not alone. Our body may change as we age, but there is a lot we can do to improve body composition, energy and long-term health.

Why this happens.

Many people find that the strategies which worked in their 20s and 30s are no longer effective in their 40s, 50s and beyond.

This is because muscle mass declines with age and hormones change in a way that influences how and where we store body fat. Busy and stressful lives with disturbed sleep compound the problem.

The good news is that sustainable improvements can usually be achieved once the underlying drivers are identified and addressed.

My role is to help you understand what is happening and develop a personalised plan that fits your lifestyle, preferences and goals.

How I Can Help.

Looking beyond weight loss

Health is not about weight. Health is about your metabolism. Many people focus exclusively on body weight, but this is a distraction from what is important.

Blood tests and body composition often tell a much more meaningful story. Blood tests tell us how our metabolism is running day to day. DEXA body composition scans provide detailed information about body fat, muscle mass and bone density. Combining this information we can build a detailed understanding of your true health and therefore know the right approach to addressing the weight on the scales.

I will help you to:

Understand what is happening

Using your health history, diet and lifestyle, alongside blood test results and, where appropriate, DEXA body composition scans, we build a detailed picture of what is happening beneath the surface that your bathroom scales cannot tell you.

Create a personalised plan

The aim is not a short-term diet. The aim is to make specific diet and lifestyle changes that become habits. Once you success in changing habits you will have health that you can maintain for years to come.

Track progress effectively

Where appropriate, repeating blood tests and DEXA body composition scans help us measure changes in your health and your body fat, muscle mass and bone health. This allows progress to be assessed using far more than the scales alone.

Frequently asked questions.

Question 1.

Do I need a DEXA scan? No. A DEXA scan is optional, although many clients find it valuable for understanding body composition and measuring progress. They also provide a great baseline starting point against which to measure yourself over time.

Can consultations be conducted online? Yes. Consultations are available both online and in person. Client consultations are held in Sydney CBD (near Circular Quay), Rose Bay or online. Ideally, if possible, the first session should be in person. After this sessions may be online or by phone depending on your needs. My preference is face to face sessions because, in my experience, these are more effective.

How many sessions will I need? This varies from person to person and depends on your goals, health history and the level of support required. Many people will do 1-2 sessions initially and then have a session every 3-4 months to help stay on track. After that most people check in annually for a DEXA review and analysis.

Do I need to count calories? No and you should never be hungry. If you are something is not right and we need to adjust your plan.

Will I need supplements? Only where appropriate. Diet and lifestyle foundations are always my priority. Supplement do have a place in specific circumstances but this will depend on you, your blood tests and your diet.

Can you review my blood test results? Yes, blood test results are an important factor in identifying factors that may be influencing weight, energy levels and metabolic health. Note: I am not a doctor and your GP should always be your first port of call for health related matters.
